Teeth grinding
Teeth grinding and jaw clenching (also called bruxism) is often related to stress or anxiety. It does not always cause symptoms, but some people get facial pain and headaches, and it can wear down your teeth over time. Most people who grind their teeth and clench their jaw are not aware they're doing it. It often happens during sleep, or while concentrating or under stress.
HOW IS THIS TREATED?
We use Botulinum Toxin Type A to address this condition. When injected into specific muscles, it relaxes them to ensure relief from chronic clenching or grinding, also having the effect of softening the contours of the face when the jaw has become widened. This treatment takes 20 minutes to administer and is temporary (lasting 3 to 4 months) so will require regular top-ups to maintain, but results are noticeable between 2 and 5 days after treatment.
Factors To Consider
Teeth grinding can be caused by a variety of reasons, including stress, anxiety, and sleep problems, and can become exacerbated through the consumption of alcohol, caffeine, and recreational drugs, as well as prescription medication like SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor). The masseter muscle, used in chewing, when overexercised, can cause a wide or square-looking jaw. This can be a problem for women, who may feel that their face looks too masculine, and wish to have a more rounded, feminine look.
