Wide Jaw

Wide Jaw

Wide jaw

A wide jaw in women can be seen as a masculine or unattractive trait, manifesting as a large, square lower jaw. This condition is caused by bone, muscle, or a mixture of the two. The most obvious cause is a large jaw bone, or mandible, which is usually congenital but can develop through conditions such as acromegaly.

HOW IS THIS TREATED?

Wide, or square, jaws can be caused by overactive masseter muscles in the sides of the face, used when chewing. Bruxism or grinding teeth (consciously or subconsciously during sleep) can cause your masseter muscle to grow in size, leading to a heavier-set jaw. Botox can be used to partially reduce the appearance, but other options may be required to reach the desired effect of a more rounded face.

Usually two to three sessions are recommended (one month apart from each), to repeatedly stimulate these fibroblast cells and give the best longer term effects. Downtime is fairly minimal but profhilo usually results in little bumps forming under the skin at the injection points for around 12 hours post treatment (basically the bolus of hyaluronic acid), before the molecules dissipate throughout the skin.

There is a tiny risk of bruising but overall it is an extremely safe and effective treatment. Occasionally, if profhilo is injected too deeply people won’t see much of an effect (if its injected into the fat layer it will just cause swelling and then very little hydration or tightening), so it’s important to go to an experienced practitioner who really knows their skin layers!

Factors To Consider

The size of the masseter muscle, used for chewing, can be congenital or acquired. Like a muscle, it increases in size as it is exercised, whether that be through chewing gum, clenching teeth, or bruxism (excessive teeth grinding). This is an acquired wide jaw, whereas a congenital wide jaw is apparent throughout life, but can get worse with exercise.
