Excessive Sweating

Excessive Sweating

excessive sweating

Perspiration is a natural response when our body temperature increases (whether that’s due to our environment, exercise or illness). Some people experience this kind of excessive sweating without stimuli. This is a condition known as hyperhidrosis that can affect the armpits, hands, feet and face. It’s a relatively common condition that impacts everyday life causing embarrassment, stress and anxiety.

What are the causes of Excessive Sweating?

Sweating mainly occurs on your feet, hands, face, head, and underarms. It usually starts in childhood. About 30 to 50 percent of people with this type have a family history of excessive sweating.

Primary focal hyperhidrosis

Your genetics can also determine whether or not you develop jowls and how noticeable they become over time. If either of your parents has jowls, you’re more likely to develop them. If you naturally have thin skin or limited amounts of collagen and elastin in your skin, you may start to notice jowls early in life. It’s possible to develop jowls as early as your teens or twenties.

Secondary generalized hyperhidrosis

Secondary generalized hyperhidrosis is sweating caused by a medical condition or as a side effect of certain medications. It generally starts in adulthood. With this type, you might sweat all over your body, or in just one area. You might also sweat while you’re sleeping.

HOW IS THIS TREATED?

Botulinum (anti-wrinkle injections) helps reduce excessive sweating. When severe sweating gets in the way of daily activities and antiperspirants are not working, you may be a suitable candidate for the Botulinum toxin treatment. The body areas that can be affected include the underarms, palms, feet and forehead.  Botulinum toxin is approved by the FDA to treat the symptoms of severe underarm sweating when topical medicines do not work well enough. Botulinum toxin is injected into the affected areas to help control this condition by temporarily blocking the chemical signals from the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands. When the sweat glands do not receive chemical signals, the severe sweating settles.
