Skin Tags
Skin tags are small, usually flesh-coloured, growths that start as flattened bumps, then grow to hang from surrounding skin on a small stalk, called a peduncle. Skin tags are made of loose collagen fibres and blood vessels surrounded by skin, so they tend to bleed when they get cut or caught on jewellery or clothes. They mostly occur in areas where skin folds or creases, like the neck, groin, armpits, and (for women) under the breasts.
What are the causes of Skin Tags?
Skin tags are thought to be caused by friction, hence their appearance in the eyelid, where folds of skin rub or chafe. Also known as cutaneous papilloma, acrochorda, or fibroepithelial polyps, most people will have a skin tag at some point during the course of their life, but certain factors can increase the likelihood of their development.
Pregnancy, age, weight, and diabetes can affect how likely you are to have skin tags. This is because of an increased chance of having creases and folds in skin that provide the perfect conditions for skin tag development.
These polyps are usually painless and benign, unless they are in an area that makes them more likely to catch on jewellery, clothes (around the waistband or bra), seat belts, or pets, in which case they may need to be removed. Skin tags are not contagious, and are not usually signs of a more serious issue.
HOW IS THIS TREATED?
Currently, laser resurfacing is one of the most efficient methods of removing skin tags, and is known in the industry for being particularly effective at treating skin tags.
